A Crazy Christmas

After being absent from the shows staged at the Drama Centre for so long, it was absolutely amazing to catch a star-studded cast of theatre veterans come together in A Crazy Christmas concert, staged by Dream Academy Playhouse. I was blown away with the perfect harmonisation of all 10 actors with the band, led by musical director Elaine Chan.
The reportoire of songs was not only refreshing to say the least, it included the classics. Denise Tan's "All I want for Christmas is you" first set the stage after the opening number by the entire cast, "The 12 days of Christmas". In particular, I enjoyed "Rain", a duet performed at first by Tan Kheng Hua and her brilliant 9-year old daughter, which other cast members later joined in to carry on numerous other songs with the word "rain" in them. Then there was Hossan's short stand-up which cracked every audience member in his/her seat, before he took to the piano for another delectable tune. My favourite was Lim Kay Siu's "Dancing Monkey", which he dedicated to his wife, and to which he claimed to first play when he was 13 years old.
Apart from Hossan, Pam Oei was yet another expected turn-on, from her guffawing laughter and crazy antics (like that hard-core rocker-chic number) to conspicuously appearing in the middle of Tan Kheng Hua's duet with her daughter and interrupting "Rain" with "Let it snow let it snow let it snow...", one would not be able to predict her next move. To end the solos, Director Selena Tan put up a unique "Broadway Baby" song tracing the history on Jesus' birth more than two Centuries ago, a novelty much to the delight and amusement of all.
I'm definitely looking forward to Christmas once more...
